Refinding the Father in Psychoanalytic Couple Therapy

WORKSHOP with Dr. Andrew Briggs

The historical absence or neglect of the father in the contemporary psychoanalytic literature leaves a theoretical gap which influences our understanding and the treatment of our patients. In modern societies the role of the father is potentially diversely occupied. The male father at conception may be present or if absent leaves the role vacant for the child’s mother or new partner. Single fathers and mothers are solo but optimally need to provide parenting as a parental couple. Same sex female and male parental couples are faced with a comparable necessity. But what is the consequence on parental and child development when none of these parents occupy the father’s role?  Drawing upon over thirty-five years work with couples and families Dr Briggs presents in this workshop what he has found to be a successful clinical instrument for re-establishing the father, thus enabling the parental couple to exist for this diverse spectrum of parents.

Andrew Briggs, PhD is Member of the Tavistock Society of Psychotherapists and the Association of Child Psychotherapists, London, UK. He is now working in private practice and through provider contracts with mental health care organisations.
